ABOUT THE COMPETITION

How it Works

New to the 48 Hour format? Here's what you need to know.

Timeline

Virtual Kickoff: Friday, Nov 8th, 7pm

via a Zoom link provided to your Team Leader

Sunday, Nov 10th, 7pm

Submit your film digitally no later than 7pm

Required Line and Prop

Every film must use the same required line and prop somewhere in their film. Use them creatively, don't throw them away or let them take over the whole film. The required line may be written instead of spoken. The line can be written or spoken in a non-English language as long as there are English subtitles.

Examples of line and prop:

Line: I know you think I'm being dramatic.

Prop: A lighter

Required Genre

Each film will be assigned a random genre at the Virtual Kickoff event. Team representatives will spin a wheel of genres. If you don't like your first genre, you can re-spin. However, your second spin is what you are stuck with. You cannot go back to the first genre. So it's gamble!

The order that filmmakers will spin for their genre during the Kickoff Event will be based on the order they registered. So it pays to register early!

Examples of genres:

drama, comedy, action, noir, horror, rom com, musical, spy, sci fi, western, documentary, mockumentary, thriller

Friday, Nov 15th, 7pm @ the Marines' Memorial Theatre

we will premiere the Top 16 films at a live event! The event lasts about 2 hours.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at Eventbrite.

Each team will receive two free tickets for the finale.

You don't know who will screen at the Top 16

We do not announce the top 16 prior to the screening.

All filmmakers will be waiting with bated breath to see if their film made it to the big screen, how nerve wracking!

Films are judged by an anonymous panel of 8 filmmakers and non-filmmakers.

Judges don't discuss their thoughts with each other or even know who the other judges are.

Register now!

Entry fee is $50 per team. It doesn't matter the size of the team, it's always $50.

Who We Are

Andrew is a video producer from Modesto, CA and has lived in SF for over 10 years. In 2019 he started a 48 Hour Film Competition in Modesto that just wrapped its 4th competition with over 50 competing teams and over 450 people attending the premiere screening.

His primary focus is running his production company Re:Told Productions, telling the story of brands, artists, and non-profits. At Re:Told, we help your story get told.

Marines' Memorial Theatre (Theatre 33) | Venue & Sponsor

Built in 1926, the historic Marines’ Memorial Theatre is an intimate 564-seat jewel box theatre located in the heart of San Francisco’s theatre district between Union Square and Nob Hill.

We are also dedicated to bringing the best national, international and local Music, Dance, Author Talks & Lectures and theatrical or film presentations to Bay Area audiences.

We are excited to bring this event to SF and be another venue that supports the local filmmaking community.
